Poor People's Campaign begins in Washington DC

Dr. Ralph Abernathy, successor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference are granted a permit for an encampment on the Mall in Washington DC. Eventually more than 2,500 people occupy Resurrection City--a shantytown filled with poor people of all races.
